'Making Spirits Bright' as far as the 2021 Hallmark Christmas films go is somewhere around middle of the pack. Kind of like Romeo and Juliet or Hatfields and McCoys set at Christmas. Was a bit mixed on the premise, with it not being novel territory but did like that it did try to do something different with the feuding. Am less familiar with Carlo Marks, but what has been seen of him has been pretty amiable if not mind-blowing. Taylor Cole has always been inconsistent for me, in some roles she is charming, in others she's too icy. This is a super seasonal read-feels and jingley fun all the way.Expectations were mixed here for 'Making Spirits Bright'. Beth and Ari at first sparkle, then sizzle together and their physical scenes are beautifully constructed by being underplayed and between the lines. It rock-n-rolls from page 1 to 100, full of delight with visuals, baking delights, and both romantic and Christmas feels. This is my first Bryce Oakley book, but not my last. Or rather, which prize does she really want? Surely she can’t hope for both… Or more?Ĭan Beth win the prize that will allow her to fulfill her dreams of opening her own bakery in Snowy Springs. Temperatures are raised to match the baking (and caking) as Beth sets her sights on winning not only the Top Holiday Baker TV show but also its acerbic celebrity judge Ari Grecco. Sure, I wish it was longer, but the thing about novellas is-or should be-they bring us the setup and plot boiled down so we can get into the fun stuff. Ovens aren’t the only thing turned on in Snowy Springs this Christmas!īryce Oakley brings us a short & sweet novella for the holiday season that packs a lot into its 100 pages. I will definitely be checking out the next book in this series. It says it's 100 pages but it's actually only like 85 because there's a bunch of recipes in the back of the book. It is quite fluffy with minimal angst and it's quite short. I get it that she's kind of edgy but she could have done with a little bit more empathy for Beth's situation. Ari comes in and doesn't really take into account any of Beth's feelings and it just rubbed me the wrong way. She was funny and charming and dedicated plus she had a lot of terrible food puns and they were wonderful but I did not like the love interest. She's worried about what could happen if she is dating a judge and trying to navigate what is more important in her life at the moment. Things start to go awry when one of the judges starts flirting with her outside of the show and she starts to catch some feelings. Beth is competing on a baking show hoping to win so she can open up her own bakery. It's set in this little idyllic Colorado town with a main character named Beth. This was super cute! It's a baking holiday romance so obviously I was on board. Get ready for a brand new series of holiday romances! The Snowy Springs holiday romances are fluffy, fun, and quick reads, complete with bad Christmas puns and merrily-ever-afters. Surely a little Christmas fling could be fun and meaningless and not ruin everything I've worked so hard for, right? And for elf’s sake, tonight, I don’t care that Ari kissing me under the falling snow does not fit into my plan. it’s Christmas and Snowy Springs is magical at Christmas. Even though Ari’s flirtations are irresistible, she’s basically off-limits, right? She’s a judge, which I think means it's actually illegal for me to even be her friend, and besides, she's only in town for a few days.Įverything about Ari puts my dream in danger. Not Ariadne-“call me Ari”-Greco, the gorgeous celebrity chef judge of the competition. Open my very own bakery here in Snowy Springs. I have carefully constructed my life plan: Bake my jingle bells off.
